Biography
Executive Director of the Canadian Worker Co-operative Federation (CWCF), Hazel Corcoran has been involved in all aspects of worker co-op development and support including capitalization, advisory services, research and writing, and launching the CoopZone Developers’ Network.
Trained as a lawyer and fluently bilingual, Hazel has served the co-operative movement in a variety of capacities, including as Director of le Conseil canadien de la coopération (1994-2005), Calgary Co-op (1999-2002), Prairie Sky Co-housing Co-op (2006-2012), and First Calgary Financial Credit Union (2007-2012), and coordinator of the CoopZone Developers’ Network through CWCF (since 2005). She is a delegate to The Co-operators in Alberta where she has been elected Region Chair. She helped found the Western Canada Labour-Worker Co-operative Council, a network of labour and worker co-op activists dedicated to improve conditions for workers. She is also a co-founder of the Big Idea Rainbow Foundation, whose goal is to spread the message of co-operatives through popular culture, started in 2006.
Hazel was born and raised in New Orleans but for most of her life has lived in Canada. She resides in Calgary, Alberta.
About the Canadian Worker Co-operative Federation (CWCF)
The Canadian Worker Co-operative Federation (CWCF) is a national, bilingual grassroots membership organization of and for worker co-operatives, related types of co-operatives (multi-stakeholder co-ops and worker-shareholder co-ops), and organizations that support the growth and development of worker co-operatives. CWCF was incorporated in 1992.
Vision
To be a growing, cohesive network of democratically controlled worker co-ops that provide a high quality of worklife, and support the development of healthy and sustainable local economies, based on co-operative principles.
Mission
To strengthen our worker co-ops, support the development of new worker co-ops, represent the Canadian worker co-op movement in Canada and internationally, and strengthen the Federation.
CWCF has 2 Region Federation members in Quebec: le Réseau de la coopération du travail du Québec, and la Fédération des coopératives forestières du Quebec. CWCF is a member of CICOPA, the international organisation of worker co-ops and related types, as well as of the Canadian Co-operative Association and the Conseil canadien de la coopération et de la mutualité.
